The notion of discipleship in any context suggests that it is a process and should be done in partnership with others. As I reflect on this subject these thoughts crossed my mind and I will like to share them with you today:
Firstly, it is not enough to be just any kind of a disciple. Jesus said, “…it is enough for the disciple to be LIKE his Master…” (Mt 10:25). As believers, we start our discipleship journey from imperfection but look-up to Christ by faith for his perfection in life and ministry.
Secondly, in discipleship process, learning is not enough we must be doers of his Word/obedient servants. I like the saying that “Discipleship is more than getting to know what the teacher knows. It is getting to be what he is” (Juan Carlos Ortiz said). This is best practiced a day at a time in partnership with others.
Fourthly, discipleship is a life-long participatory learning process, which is done in fellowship with the Godhead and fellow believers. It is rather unfortunate that discipleship today is reduced to few weeks’ course schedules; limited to young converts and or children only. On the contrary, I would rather see discipleship as a process or journey of love relationship between believers (young or old) and Christ himself, and a fellowship of true disciples who are seeking to make more disciples for their Master on their pilgrim journey on earth.
Fifthly, in discipleship process, the unity of Christ’ body is supreme over individual visions and gifting. I think the true test of a discipleship is the ability to walk and work with others at the instant of Christ. I like the way our Master, Jesus, put it, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (Jn 13:35NLT). In other words, your lack of love for others will prove to the world that you are NOT Christ disciple, no matter the signs and wonders. Remember, true disciples are not only TEAM builders they are also TEAM members that must play the game according to the rules.
I look forward to your comment fellow disciples.
